Analysis of suitable energy generation technologies from biomass in the Kaluga region, Russia

The present study was executed by BWC for International Finance Corporation within the scope of an agreement between the Government of Kaluga Region and IFC, which main goal is to build up a program for the development of renewable energy sources (RES) in the Kaluga region.
This study describes and analyzes the main types of equipment for the collection of forest residues, production of wood chips, as well as preparation of bark and wood waste, and the key methods for the direct combustion of wood fuel.
The analysis showed that the most promising type of wood fuel for power generation in Kaluga region is logging residues, processed into wood chips.
Models have been developed to assess the cost-effectiveness of wood fuel to generate electricity and heat.
